UK Ambassador to Israel Closes Eyes to Nuclear Weapons Right Next To Him

The UK’s Ambassador to Israel, Matthew Gould has written an article for this week’s Jewish Chronicle in which he laments the decline in support for Israel in the UK. He rightly points out that a lot of this is due to Israel’s continuing occupation of Palestinian lands in defiance of numerous UN resolutions and also the relentless building of illegal Jewish settlements on occupied Palestinian land.

No wonder that many people including senior political leaders are losing faith in the ‘two-state solution’ – if Zionist settlers continue to have their way, soon there will be no land left for the Palestinians to build a state on. That is why we are hearing increasingly vocal calls for a one state solution.

Anyway, what is very tedious about Gould’s article is that he engages in the now routine scaremongering about Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme but fails to utter a word – not one word – about Israel’s confirmed possession of nuclear weapons and its refusal to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. If our Ambassador wishes to see a nuclear free Middle East then shouldn’t he be speaking out about the nuclear weaponry that has been introduced in that region by Israel?

Unless, of course, the real goal is not a nuclear free Middle East, but a Middle East that Israel continues to be able to dominate militarily.

I have sent Matthew Gould a message querying his odd silence about Israel’s nuclear weapons via Twitter. If you would like to get in touch with him he can be found on Twitter @ukinisrael.

  1. Jack Holt says:

How can Israel be said to ‘militarily dominate the Middle East’? It doesn’t use its military capability to dictate to neighbouring powers, therefore it can’t be said to dominate them. Israel’s weapons are for defence against the undemocratic regimes surrounding it. Iran doesn’t need nuclear weapons to defend itself, it is already a powerful country in the region. Why does Iran need nuclear weapons if it doesn’t need them for defence?

    • Israel uses its nuclear weapons to bully and threaten regional countries (Iran is just the latest country to be at the receiving end of Israeli warmongering). It is a tragedy that Israel has been allowed to develop nuclear weapons and ignore numerous UN resolutions calling on it to withdraw from the occupied territories and stop building illegal Jewish settlements thereon.

See also this excellent comment from Ian Watson to a story in yesterday’s Independent:

“Israel has ignored 150+ UN resolutions, Iran has ignored 4.

“Israel has attacked openly every one of its neighbours in its short history. Iran has not attacked any neighbour and only defended itself when the US and UK cajoled Iraq to attack them leaving a million dead.

“Israel has refused pointedly to sign the NNPT, has refused to allow the IAEA into its Dimona area whilst Iran has allowed the IAEA to monitor its stockpile, facilities and research programmes.

“The IAEA has stated recently that Iran’s 20% enriched uranium has reduced on a par with produced medical isotopes, not one ounce of Uranium has gone unaccounted for.

“The Intelligence communities of the US STILL agree that Iran finally closed down its last research programme into nuclear weapon design and had in fact stopped all proper research some years earlier.

“Netahanyu has “predicted” every year since 1992 that Iran would have a nuclear weapon “very soon”.

“Iran has fairly withdrawn some facility inspections until the IAEA give it guarantees that its inspection will not be used for military intelligence purposes for Israel and the US, this is a fair option seeing as we would not allow the Chinese or Russians to wander round Aldermastion or Fort Lauderdale would we?”

  2. Jack Holt says:

“Israel uses its nuclear weapons to bully and threaten regional countries (Iran is just the latest country to be at the receiving end of Israeli warmongering).”

Then give an example of Israel using its nuclear capability to bully another country, besides Iran.

“Israel has attacked openly every one of its neighbours in its short history. Iran has not attacked any neighbour and only defended itself when the US and UK cajoled Iraq to attack them leaving a million dead.”

Given that the Iranian regime repeatedly calls for Israel to be wiped off the face of the earth, Israel is right to be concerned about it acquiring nuclear weapons.

The 6-day war, in which it attacked every one of its neighbours, was in response to every one of its neighbours amassing at its borders! To portray this as Israeli aggression is very disingenuous.

Quoting the number of UN violations and its many other failings is all besides the point. No-one claims Israel is perfect, but to suggest that it “militarily dominates the Middle East”, as you did in your original post is unfair, as Israel has only used its military to defend its borders it can’t be said to ‘dominate’ other countries. How can you be said to be bullying others into accepting your right to exist?!

    Salam Br Inayatullah

Was looking out for your opinion and views on yesterday’s big news, the extraditions, community leaders such as yourself should say something.

    • AA Yasin. My apologies – I have been busy with other work. I did post several messages on Twitter about the disgraceful treatment of Babar Ahmad by the UK government and the way he has been so let down by the UK justice system. You can read them on the top right hand side of this blog.

      • Yasin Ahmed says:

Thank you for taking the time to reply and address this burning issue which many in the community feel strongly about, with regards.
