The UK’s Ambassador to Israel, Matthew Gould has written an article for this week’s Jewish Chronicle in which he laments the decline in support for Israel in the UK. He rightly points out that a lot of this is due to Israel’s continuing occupation of Palestinian lands in defiance of numerous UN resolutions and also the relentless building of illegal Jewish settlements on occupied Palestinian land.
No wonder that many people including senior political leaders are losing faith in the ‘two-state solution’ – if Zionist settlers continue to have their way, soon there will be no land left for the Palestinians to build a state on. That is why we are hearing increasingly vocal calls for a one state solution.
Anyway, what is very tedious about Gould’s article is that he engages in the now routine scaremongering about Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme but fails to utter a word – not one word – about Israel’s confirmed possession of nuclear weapons and its refusal to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. If our Ambassador wishes to see a nuclear free Middle East then shouldn’t he be speaking out about the nuclear weaponry that has been introduced in that region by Israel?
Unless, of course, the real goal is not a nuclear free Middle East, but a Middle East that Israel continues to be able to dominate militarily.
I have sent Matthew Gould a message querying his odd silence about Israel’s nuclear weapons via Twitter. If you would like to get in touch with him he can be found on Twitter @ukinisrael.
