The Player – An Exquisite Opening Take

Just after midnight on Saturday, after everyone was asleep in the house, I finally got round to watching Robert Altman’s splendid 1992 movie, The Player. I don’t have the time to go into much detail about the film, but, oh! what a memorable opening take. It lasts an incredible eight minutes – all in one take remember – and includes knowing references to the opening take of Welles’ Touch of Evil as well as a character criticising the tendency of Directors to shout ‘Cut! Cut! Cut!’ Just exquisite.
