Local Hero and Gregory’s Girl

Bill Forsyth’s 1983 movie Local Hero is showing tonight on Film 4. After managing to fail to watch Local Hero and Forsyth’s earlier 1981 movie Gregory’s Girl over a period of almost thirty years, I finally ordered them both off Amazon a couple of months ago. I watched them both late at night and it was just a wonderful experience. Local Hero has beautiful Scottish scenery, a magical Mark Knopfler musical score, a very funny performance by Burt Lancaster and to top it all, a mermaid. It also has a powerful environmental message that was ahead of its time. Unmissable.

Two of my favorite movies. I lived in Scotland in a village quite similar to where that was filmed. Just picked up Gregory’s Girl from the local bookmobile, after not having watched it for 30 years. We own Local Hero and I can probably recite the dialogue, word for word. STELLA!!!!!!! The Knopfler score is indeed fabulous.
