Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips banned from the UK?

An informed source tells me that the Home Office have issued an exclusion order against Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips. The exclusion order comes in the wake of an ongoing campaign by sections of the media to highlight the threat posed by those they consider to be ‘hate preachers’. If nothing else, this campaign should alert UK Muslims about the importance of standing up for free speech, including speech they dislike. Governments – and in fact anyone in a position of authority – are usually the enemies of free speech. I don’t really hold any candle for Bilal Philips and I don’t think much of his books, but I also don’t want the government dictating who I can and cannot listen to. Bilal Philips has visited the UK on many occasions previously and I don’t believe he was ever thought to have broken any of our laws. If Bilal Philips did happen to break any UK laws then he could always be prosecuted. To pre-emptively ban him though – and remember that this is only the latest in a series of bans on preachers imposed by the UK government – demonstrates how much our freedoms have been eroded in recent years.
