The joys of the Saturday Guardian

For over a decade now, one of the main joys in life for me has been buying the Saturday edition of The Guardian. I was very disappointed when they stopped publishing the weekly news review section in the Saturday edition some years back – it was always a wonderful read with lovely photos accompanying the text – and it was almost as good as The Week which you have to shell out a couple of quid for. Still, the Saturday Guardian remains an indispensable read and it normally takes me a full week to go through all the best bits. As it happens, it is just this afternoon, after jumu’ah prayers that I was reclining in my chair in the garden – gorgeous day by the way – that I came across a superb essay by Peter Bienart published in last Saturday’s edition of the Guardian, in their New York Times book review summary section, which appears once a month. Bienart’s essay is entitled The Failure of the American Jewish Establishment. I can’t find the Guardian link online so I am instead linking to the NYT original.
